“For this the Earth Mourns,” 1979 by Lois Dorfman
On the grounds of the Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo
6465 Sylvania Avenue
Sylvania, OH 43560
The title of the memorial is taken from the last line of Jeremiah 4:23-28. Its 13 bronze relief figures of men, women, and children – afraid, surprised, resigned, questioning – rise from a brick-scattered base as if frozen at the instant. Set under high trees on the grounds of the center in the 6400 block of Sylvania Avenue, the memorial is a walk-around monument, each figure executed to stress a different facet of human innocence facing savagery.
